Planning a Bar for a No-Glass Venue

A venue’s “no glass” rule can change how you shop for and serve drinks. Before choosing alcohol or bar supplies, find out exactly where the restriction applies. Some venues prohibit glass anywhere on the property; others restrict it in guest areas, around a pool, or outdoors.

The venue’s written policy is the starting point for your bar plan.

Questions to ask the venue

• Does the rule apply to the entire property or only specific areas?

• Are glass bottles permitted behind the bar or in a designated storage area?

• Are there restrictions on drinkware, cans, decorations, or other breakable items?

• Does the venue require approval of the bartender or beverage plan before the event?

• Where can staff unload and store beverages?

Share the answers with your bartending team before you purchase anything. A rule about guest drinkware calls for a different plan from a rule that prohibits glass bottles throughout the property.

Choose packaging that fits the policy

Depending on what your venue allows, canned beer and seltzers, wine sold in approved packaging, and suitable nonalcoholic beverages may simplify the bar. Cocktail options depend on which spirit containers the venue permits and the menu you want to serve.

Confirm product availability with your retailer before finalizing the menu. Don’t assume that alcohol purchased in glass can be transferred or stored on site without the venue’s permission.
